IntoNetZero launches in Scotland with support from Anas Sarwar to boost diversity in energy sector

A NEWLY founded non-profit aiming to increase diversity in the UK’s energy sector has launched in Scotland with the support of Scottish Labour Leader Anas Sarwar.

Following its earlier introduction in London in June 2024, the launch event for IntoNetZero took place this week at Barclays Eagle Labs in Glasgow.

It brought together leaders and stakeholders from across the industry.

With the energy transition offering a significant economic boost to communities across the UK, the non-profit’s mission is to ensure young people, particularly from traditionally underrepresented backgrounds, can access opportunities in the new energy economy.

It seeks to build awareness of energy jobs, inspire careers, and foster opportunities for diverse entrepreneurs.

Sarwar endorsed the initiative, stating, “I want to work with inspiring organisations like IntoNetZero to help build collaboration across the country.

“We need to build something that is transformational for our country and for young people.”

Beena Sharma, co-founder of IntoNetZero and CEO of CCU International, said: “IntoNetZero is an essential movement to ensure that all young people, particularly those from underrepresented backgrounds, have a clear entry point into the new energy economy.”

The Glasgow event featured speakers including Nicole Doig-Bustamante, an associate at Gneiss Energy, who praised the initiative.

She said: “IntoNetZero is an amazing opportunity to help get young people thinking about what is possible in our sector and tackling some of the barriers that existed for me starting out.”

The non-profit’s initial launch in London was supported by key stakeholders like City & Guilds and Shell UK.

Anthony Harte, head of social impact at Shell UK said: “Shell UK is delighted to announce its support alongside other key stakeholders for IntoNetZero.

“We are committed to ensuring that people from every background have the opportunity to build careers and thrive in the new energy sector.”

IntoNetZero is now working to develop further partnerships with industry leaders to provide entry points for diverse communities, with the goal of creating a more equitable energy landscape.
